Our great team of volunteers are at the heart of all we do and a real blessing to us and the community. They love the family feel of Loaves ‘n’ Fishes and the yummy free food we provide them with. We love seeing them grow in confidence, skills and employability. Many come to us via local job centres, others initially came to us off the streets for help.

We also welcome volunteers who have retired and have no intention of slowing down just yet, or are simply looking to be involved with a community cause.

We work with each volunteer on a one-to-one basis and all have access to our Support Hub:

  • Support with benefit, housing and debt issues
  • Help to open a bank account
  • Arranging medical assessments
  • Creation of a Learning Plan
  • Work experience and training
  • Provision of courses such as Health and Safety, First Aid
  • Help with CVs and job applications
  • Use of our Family Room

Martin – warehouse team member

Martin was a 58-year-old facing eviction and homelessness when he came to us. He had lived without gas and electricity for four months in a house unfit for habitation. He had heavy debt arrears, was on the wrong benefit, had personal hygiene problems and was sure he was dying of cancer. He had learning difficulties, was isolated and vulnerable.

Loaves ‘n’ Fishes successfully supported Martin in his appeal against eviction. We arranged payments for his debts and supported him with his ESA application and budgeting advice. We provided him with furniture, clothing, food, toiletries and cleaning products. We accompanied him to medical appointments where he learned that there was no sign of cancer. He was referred for counselling to manage his anxiety and depression.

Martin’s life has been transformed. He receives ongoing support from Loaves ‘n’ Fishes including help reading his mail and arranging medical appointments. At his request we also connected him with a local church support group.
